Who is building the Zojila tunnel?

New bids are being solicited for the tunnel's construction. MEIL (Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Ltd) wins the tender with a stated price of Rs 4509 crores in August 2020. MEIL will build the tunnel. The government will provide land and other infrastructure required for the project.

The tunnel will be built under the Hooghly River at Zojila near Kharagpur in West Bengal. It will reduce congestion at several major crossings in Kolkata and help transport more cargo by road. When completed, it will be the longest single-tube rail tunnel in Asia.

The tunnel is expected to be finished by 2027. After its completion, trains will be able to run through it without stopping which will save nearly one hour of running time between Kolkata and Delhi.

In October 2019, the National High Speed Rail Authority (NHSA) announced that Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has been selected as the preferred bidder for the project. MHI will prepare the bid document and submit it to NHSA for evaluation. Bids will be invited again after 180 days if MHI feels like there are improvements that can be made to their proposal. The new deadline for submission of bids is August 2020.

Who started the Atal tunnel construction?

Vajpayee had an elderly acquaintance whose residence was at Lahul-Spiti. He took up the tunnel problem with Vajpayee. In the year 2000, Atal Bihari visited Himachal Pradesh and announced the construction of a tunnel beneath Rohtang Pass. The first project study said that the tunnel would cost Rs 5 billion, or Rs 500 crore. But by the time of his death in 2013, the estimated cost had risen to Rs 13 billion or $200 million. His advice was taken on board and subsequently the Government approved the construction of the tunnel.

Is the Zojila tunnel completed?

The Zoji La Tunnel is a 14.2 km long road tunnel through the Zoji La Pass in the Himalayas that connects Sonmarg and Drass town in the Kargil region of the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh. It is presently under construction and is projected to be completed within 5-7 years of its start in 2018.

It will reduce travel time between Sonmarg and Drass from today's three hours to just 30 minutes once it is complete.

The tunnel will also have a direct link with Srinagar via Zojila Pass, thus avoiding the current circuit through Kupwara district. The government has already released funds for its construction which will be jointly funded by the governments of India and Pakistan.

Once completed, this tunnel will provide much-needed connectivity to residents of Jammu and Kashmir who currently have no access to better roads or transportation. The project was first proposed in the 1990s but remained unfulfilled due to differences over cost estimates and funding arrangements. After several delays, the two countries signed an agreement in 2016 for its construction and implementation.

Sonmarg is a city and a municipal committee in India's Jammu and Kashmir state. It is located at a height of 4600 feet above sea level on the Sonmarg-Drass highway near the boundary with Pakistan. The old town of Sonmarg is well preserved with many traditional houses.
